Mark Udall: For this Democrat, finding common ground a way of life

"It's going to take working together, finding common ground and getting things done," Udall said last month during a debate on Channel 2 with his Republican opponent, former Congressman Bob Schaffer.

Udall's "can't we just all get along" mantra is expressed so often on the stump it elicits eye rolling from his opponents.

But those who have known Udall for years say it's not a political shtick or a campaign slogan, but a way of life for the 58-year-old.

Former House Majority Leader Norma Anderson, a Lakewood Republican, said she disagreed with Udall over issues but never over style.

"He did not pick fights," she said. "He got along very well with others. Mark and I are still friends today."

Bob Schaffer: Republican has a thirst to be 'where the debate is'

He referred to Democrats as "liberals" or called their policies "liberal baloney" 96 times in floor debate. Universal health care was "fascism." A lack of competition for government-owned schools would lead the country in the direction of Russia's "communist legacy," he warned.

[Schaffer], upset at a health department display in the Capitol lobby advocating condom usage and safe sex, tore it down because he found it inappropriate for kids. That 1993 incident exemplifies why Mendez said Schaffer could not work with Democrats and even alienated Republicans at times.

"He just really had his ideas and he wouldn't let new facts interfere with his ideas," Mendez said. "We'd all go out and socialize, but never him. He never lunched together with us, never crossed the aisle."

The Aspen Times issued its endorsement for United States Senate today in no uncertain terms:

We heartily support Udall, a thoughtful politician with a deep knowledge of Western issues who knows how to work across the aisle. Unlike Schaffer, who is for the most part a loyal partisan foot-soldier, Udall is genuinely engaged in problem-solving, coalition-building and decision-making.

As you know, I voted against the bailout package on Monday, because I took a hard look at it through the eyes of Coloradans, and I didn't see what they needed to see.

What I saw was a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street banks that didn't do enough to reassure taxpayers that they'd get their money back, didn't have a sure process for holding CEOs accountable and limiting taxpayer-funded golden parachutes, and didn't address the mortgage crisis that is at the root of our economic problems and is forcing hard-working Coloradans out of their homes.

Just as important, what I saw was a "rescue" for Wall Street that did nothing to begin fixing the broken financial system that led us to this crisis.

I'm deeply disappointed to say that this remains the case with the legislation the House of Representatives approved today.

The Senate sent us a bill that added a single improvement to the package the House rejected, plus hundreds of pages of "sweeteners" intended to win over those of us who opposed it the first time.  Many of those "sweeteners" are things I support -- the people of Colorado know I have worked long and hard for middle-class tax breaks and have spent my entire career as a champion for investment in the new energy economy.

But no amount of "sweetener" changes the fact that Americans deserve a better solution to our economic crisis than the one we've already rejected. That's why I voted "No" on today's bailout package.

I have no interest in making the perfect the enemy of the good.  Anyone who knows my work in Congress knows that I am not a "my-way-or-the-highway" legislator.  Because of the greed and lack of oversight on Wall Street, we face an unquestionably grave economic situation that requires Congress to act.  But a better solution was still within our reach -- one that took immediate action to get our economy back on stable footing while providing the protection, oversight, and fundamental reforms American families deserve.

I was still guided by the words of the legendary basketball coach John Wooden, who told his players, "Boys, be quick. But don't hurry."

My hope was that after the House rejected Monday's bailout package, we in Congress would be quick to work together, improve the legislation, and bring forward a revised version that would deserve and obtain broad support in Colorado and across the country.  We had that opportunity until the Senate acted to re-package the old bailout bill in new clothing. We owe the taxpayers more than to hurry a deeply flawed package out the door at such tremendous cost to them.

I believe we could have added provisions that (1) provided independent oversight of the Treasury's program, (2) strengthened the equity position of taxpayers in purchasing mortgage-backed assets, (3) required the government to help responsible homeowners refinance their mortgages, and (4) insured that taxpayers will not be on the hook for irresponsible compensation packages for CEOs.  This bill claims to address these problems, but the exceptions in this bill swallow the rule.  In short, the bill doesn't do what it claims to do.

On Tuesday, stronger provisions were within our reach and we should have worked to secure them.

I hope -- for the sake of all those people who have worked hard and played by the rules, only to see their retirement whittled away or their homes' values plummet -- that this package does what its supporters promise us it will.

But in the end, my responsibility is to Colorado families, and I continue to believe as I did on Monday, that I could not ask them to foot the bill for a bailout that costs so much, with so little accountability, so little reform, and so little protection for them.

Sincerely,
Mark Udall

Mark Udall

Across America—it's an economic crisis.

In Colorado—middle-class families are squeezed to the breaking point.

And the failed economic policies of George Bush and Bob Schaffer are a big reason for the mess.

Schaffer voted for billions in special tax breaks for corporations that ship American jobs overseas.

Schaffer wants billions more in tax giveaways for big oil companies.

And Bob Schaffer voted to protect the pensions of corporate CEOs—even when those executives falsify their companies' financial documents.

CLICK HERE to see the facts about Bob Schaffer's record on corporate tax breaks, oil company tax-giveaways, and pension-protections for unscrupulous CEOs >

Bob Schaffer. Failed economic policies Colorado just can't afford.

Today I voted "No" on the $700 Billion bailout package.

My first responsibility is to Colorado families and taxpayers. I take very seriously the warnings about how conditions in the credit markets could affect the overall economy.  However, the cost of this bailout was too high and the return far too uncertain for the American families who were being asked to bear the burden.

I've always said that any response to this economic crisis must adhere to four core principles: no blank checks for the mistakes of Wall Street and the Bush Administration; a real crackdown on excessive executive compensation; help for small businesses and Main Street America; and strong taxpayer protections.

Unfortunately, while today's bailout proposal came closer to satisfying these principles than the blank check originally sought by the administration, it remains an incomplete response.

This bill does nothing to begin the fundamental reform that is needed to fix the broken financial system that led us to this crisis.  Washington is painfully slow to make fundamental reforms except in times of extreme duress and real public outrage, so we must make sure this opportunity leads to real reforms to the laws governing our markets, financial institutions, and their regulation.

I cannot accept a solution that risks $700 billion to bail out the boat, but does nothing to patch up the hole.

I have listened to the warnings of many people in the last week about the condition of our credit markets, and I understand that we are in a grave situation.  But these happen to be the very same people who not long ago rejected government intervention and told us that our financial sector was in good order.

We must take more time, work together, and bring forth a measure that garners broader support in Colorado and across the country. We must respond to the economic crisis with a bill that offers more relief for homeowners facing foreclosure, develops a better oversight structure, and institutes stronger reform measures to prevent such a crisis from happening ever again.

I look forward to continuing to work with Democrats and Republicans in Congress towards this end.

Sincerely,
Mark Udall

NEW POLL SHOWS COLORADANS REJECTING MASSIVE SMEAR CAMPAIGN AGAINST MARK UDALL

After $8 Million in Anti-Udall Attack Ads, Including Nearly $7 Million Since August 1st, Udall Still Holds 11-Point Lead Over Schaffer

Coloradans are overwhelmingly rejecting a multi-million-dollar smear campaign launched by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer and his allies against Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall, according to a new poll conducted by Colorado-based Harstad Strategic Research, Inc., for the Udall campaign. The poll shows Udall holds a 45%-34% lead over Schaffer.

Udall holds his lead despite over $8.6 million in attack ad spending against Udall by the Schaffer campaign and outside groups—including $6.9 million just since August 1st.

And despite massive spending on ads smearing Mark Udall's record on energy and taxes, Udall has actually gained ground since August on those issues among Coloradans, who favor Mark Udall over Bob Schaffer on energy, taxes, and standing up for the middle class.

"These results indicate that the attack campaign being waged by several out-of-state groups on Bob Schaffer's behalf has been strikingly ineffective so far," said Paul Harstad, CEO of Harstad Strategic Research. "In fact, to the contrary, Mark Udall's position has actually strengthened on the exact issues these ads have sought to attack him on."

"Coloradans are looking at the record and seeing that Mark Udall stands with them, while Bob Schaffer consistently stands with the Bush administration, the big oil companies, and corrupt lobbyists like Jack Abramoff," said Udall spokeswoman Tara Trujillo.  "Schaffer and his front groups are spending millions of dollars to hide that record, but Coloradans aren't being fooled."

The poll of 752 likely Colorado voters was conducted September 7th through the 9th, and has a 3.6% margin of error. Harstad Strategic Research has a long record of work in Colorado campaigns and issues, including serving as pollster to Senator Ken Salazar.

IN NEW AD, UDALL STANDS UP FOR MIDDLE-CLASS FAMILIES SQUEEZED BY ECONOMY, ENERGY PRICES
Udall: "We've Got So Much at Stake, and Together We Can Get This Right"

Senate candidate Mark Udall's campaign released a new television ad focused on the economic squeeze Colorado families are facing and the need for comprehensive energy solutions to begin getting the economy back on track.

"It's called the 'middle-class squeeze,'" says Udall in the new ad. "But today, it's more like we're being choked.

"Gas prices, food prices, heating our homes - it's all about energy. And we need to attack this crisis with everything we've got."

Udall outlines his comprehensive approach to fixing our energy policy through expanded domestic energy production and fast-tracking alternative energy technologies that create Colorado jobs. Udall also calls for immediate energy solutions, like cracking down on speculators who drive up the cost of oil - a practice that a front-page story in today's Washington Post reports is far more extensive than regulators previously knew.

"We've got so much at stake," says Udall, "and together, we can this right."

"Middle-class families are the backbone of America's strength, but they are bearing the brunt of our struggling economy," said Udall spokeswoman Tara Trujillo. "Mark is standing up for those families and fighting for energy and economic policies that work for Coloradans."

The ad can be viewed at http://www.markudall.com/Choked and a script is provided below. The ad will run on television across the state.

UDALL WINS DEBATE, OUTLINES BIPARTISAN ENERGY PLAN; SCHAFFER CONTINUES PUTTING OIL COMPANY PROFITS OVER ENERGY SOLUTIONS
Refuses to Join Udall in Bipartisan Energy Independence Plan

DENVER - One day after U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall laid out a comprehensive, bipartisan energy plan, today's Rocky Mountain News/KBDI 12/CBS 4 debate delivered a clear choice for Colorado voters - Udall's comprehensive plan for lower gas prices, energy independence, and economic policies to relieve the middle-class squeeze, or a continuation of the Schaffer/Bush economic policies of hand-outs to big oil companies, corporations that ship jobs overseas, and the wealthiest among us.

Udall asked Bob Schaffer to join him in supporting his "American Energy, American Innovation" plan - a comprehensive plan based on the bipartisan proposals of the "Gang of 10" in the U.S. Senate that increases domestic energy production, including oil and gas, as well as making historic new investments in renewable energy and efficiency technology. That plan also ends massive taxpayer subsidies to record-profit-making oil companies, and shifts them into investments in renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

Schaffer refused.

Unsurprisingly, Schaffer's refusal to join the bipartisan plan came on the same day that the oil companies also anounced their opposition.

"Bob Schaffer made it abundantly clear today that no amount of pain felt by Colorado families and no amount of bipartisan work to forge energy solutions could move him away from his agenda of putting more money in the pockets of the oil companies bankrolling his campaign," said Tara Trujillo. "Mark Udall has a comprehensive energy plan with bipartisan support, because Coloradans deserve leaders who will go to work to lower their gas prices and secure America's energy independence.

"It's a shame Bob Schaffer isn't willing to put the people of Colorado ahead of his own profits and those of his oil industry buddies."

The Rocky Mountain News/KBDI 12/CBS 4 debate will air on KBDI Channel 12 in Denver tomorrow, August 15th, at 8pm.

WITH NEW AD, UDALL DRAWS "LINE IN THE SAND" ON ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
Outlines Comprehensive Approach on Energy Policy

Senate candidate Mark Udall's campaign released a new television ad outlining Udall's commitment to a comprehensive policy for American energy independence. The ad highlights Udall's complete approach to taking on the nation's energy crisis, tapping American innovation to boost American energy production, both renewable and traditional, and to make better use of the energy we have through more efficient cars, appliances, and homes.

"We've got to draw a line in the sand," says Udall in the new ad. "That starting today, right now, America's going to work toward energy independence."

Udall has a long record of work on energy policy, having made it the centerpiece of his public service career. Long before the nation faced its current energy crisis, Udall was one of America's leaders on breaking our dependence on foreign oil and developing a new energy economy that lowers prices for families and creates jobs in Colorado.

IN SECOND DEBATE, UDALL STANDS WITH COLORADANS FOR LOWER GAS PRICES, SCHAFFER STANDS WITH OIL COMPANIES

Debate Makes Contrast Clear - Udall's Plan to Lower Prices for Coloradans vs. Schaffer's Plan to Raise Profits for Oil Companies

DENVER - U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall delivered a clear choice to Colorado voters in today's second debate of the campaign, taped at the FOX 31 studios - the Udall plan to lower gas prices immediately, break America's dependence on foreign oil, and create jobs in Colorado, or the Schaffer plan to drive profits even higher for big oil companies while Colorado families get no relief at the pump.

"It was clear from today's debate that Mark Udall is committed to real, immediate gas price relief and energy independence for America, while Bob Schaffer is only committed to putting more money in the pockets of the oil companies who are making record-breaking profits at the expense of Colorado families," said Udall spokeswoman Tara Trujillo.

Udall outlined his comprehensive plan to lower gas prices immediately through increases in domestic drilling, cracking down on speculation and price manipulation schemes on Wall Street, and easing supply pressures by releasing some oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve - a move Congressional Republicans blocked just last week. Udall also called for reducing gas prices and breaking America's dependence on foreign oil through investing in renewable energy sources like wind, solar and bio-fuels that create jobs and economic growth right here in Colorado, as well as improvements in energy conservation, increases in fuel efficiency standards for cars, and a renewed focus on energy from nuclear, clean coal, and natural gas technologies.

Udall's comprehensive plan to lower gas prices for Coloradans - backed by his career-long record as a national leader on energy policy - stood in stark contrast to Bob Schaffer's insistence on more hand-outs to an oil industry that continues to rake in record-breaking profits while families struggle, and more lockstep marching with the Bush/Cheney energy policy that created the gas price crisis in the first place. Throughout his career, Schaffer has consistently stood against investments in renewable energy, alternative fuels, and fuel efficiency that could have moved America towards energy independence.

"Bob Schaffer proved again today that, just as he has his entire career, he'll always put Big Oil first, even when it means Colorado families lose," said Trujillo. "After eight years of that kind of politics, all we've got is $4 per gallon gas and no end in sight. We deserve someone standing up for Colorado, not special interests, and Mark Udall proved today that he's the only candidate in this race who will do that.

NEW UDALL CAMPAIGN AD SETS RECORD STRAIGHT ON SCHAFFER FRONT GROUP SMEARS
Gives Coloradans the Facts on Udall Record of Middle-Class Tax Cuts, Schaffer Hand-Outs to Special Interests

Senate candidate Mark Udall's campaign today released a new television ad, setting the record straight on the latest attempt by Schaffer campaign front groups and special interests to smear Udall's record.

The new ad, called "Facts," highlights Udall's long record of support for tax cuts for middle-class families and small businesses, including voting to reduce taxes 65 times in Congress. The ad also contrasts Udall's record of standing up for Colorado families with Bob Schaffer's record of supporting billions of dollars in tax handouts to big oil companies and the super-wealthy.

"We're all Coloradans," says Udall in the ad. "We deserve better than when Washington sells out to special interests."

"We will not stand by while Bob Schaffer and the shady groups funded by special interests that are backing him distort Mark Udall's record of fighting for tax relief for Colorado's middle-class families and small businesses," said Udall campaign spokeswoman Tara Trujillo. "The facts are that Mark Udall has voted to cut taxes for Coloradans 65 times, while Bob Schaffer spent his time in Congress voting to give tax breaks to the big oil companies, HMOs and other special interests that are bankrolling his campaign. Coloradans deserve better than these false attacks, and they deserve better than Bob Schaffer's record of standing up for special interests instead of the interests of our families."

"Facts" is a direct response to a smear ad launched Thursday by Coloradans for Economic Growth (CEG), a shady front-group that has already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to prop up Bob Schaffer's campaign. CEG was last seen bankrolling an ad that used butterflies, 1970s-style swirls of color, and cartoons in an attempt to mislead Coloradans about Bob Schaffer's record of opposing renewable energy investment and carrying the oil industry's agenda in Congress.

"Facts" began airing on television this morning and can be viewed at http://www.markudall.com/FACTS.  A script and back-up information is included below.
